Chapter 2019

What is a General Chapter?

For those who are not part of a religious congregation, an aura of mystery often surfaces when they hear that the sisters who minister with and among them are meeting for a “General Chapter.”

Sisters have done this for centuries but, as the needs of our world evolve, so does the process of General Chapters. During July and August, forty-five delegates (sisters from around the world) will gather for the Religious Sisters of Charity 31st General Chapter.

31st General Chapter of the Congregation

2019 is a very special year for the Congregation because the 31st General Chapter will be taking place in July and August. The General Chapter is a major congregational meeting that is normally held every six years in order to elect the Congregational Leader and her Council, to deal with the affairs of the Congregation and to plan the focus and areas of concern for the Congregation for the next 6 years.

In order to prepare for the General Chapter, the leader of each Province or Region convokes a major meeting of sisters from that Province or Region, known as a Provincial Chapter or Regional Meeting. At these meetings the sisters elect delegates to attend the General Chapter.  These meetings will be taking place between January to April 2019.

This page will be used to keep you up-to-date with all that is happening before, during and shortly after the General Chapter.
