Mindfulness is about learning to pay attention to our thoughts, emotions, physical sensations and to the world around us – an awareness of ‘present experience with acceptance’ (Germer et al, 2005). This helps us to wake up to life, with greater awareness, curiosity, acceptance and compassion.
Research shows that Mindfulness is enormously empowering for people with chronic pain, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, gastrointestinal disorders as well as for psychological problems such as anxiety, panic, stress and relapse prevention for people in remission from depression or recovery from addiction. ‘Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose in the present moment and non-judgmentally’ (Jon Kabat-Zinn).
