Sr Joseph Christopher Hanrahan
1941-2025
Born: 10th September 1941
Entered Religious Life: 5th October 1959
Died: 24th April 2025
Honora Hanrahan, daughter of Dick and Elsie Hanrahan, (née Kavanagh) was born in Wexford in 1941, the eldest in a family of three boys and two girls.
Honora, called Nora by her family, entered the Religious Sisters of Charity on 5th October 1959, taking the name Sr. Joseph Christopher when she was received as a novice. Following her Profession on 2nd May 1962, she was missioned to Tramore Community as Sacristy / Missioner and remained there until 28th September 1966 when she was missioned to the same ministry in Mountjoy Street Convent in Dublin. On 7th September 1967 she moved to Hackney Community in London, again to work on the mission, and on 20th January 1971 she returned to Dublin to do Housekeeping and help in the Laundry in Donnybrook. Here she remained until 4th October 1974 when she was missioned to the Catering Department for the Community, Staff and Adults / Children with Special Needs in St. Patrick’s, Kilkenny.
Sr. Christopher is still remembered in Kilkenny with love and gratitude for her care and kindness to the children and adults in care and her dedicated service and support of the Staff. The Staff still talk about the delicious cakes, buns and apple scones she baked for them whenever there was a celebration and how she loved to give special treats to the children, the staff and even the younger Sisters! Her love for making jigsaws is still remembered by the Sisters and the more difficult the jigsaw, the more she enjoyed it.
In 2008 Sr. Christopher was missioned to Tramore Community where she was once again appointed to catering and hospitality, this time for the Community and the many Sisters who enjoyed their holidays in Tramore. Her generosity, her gentle, caring presence, her sense of humour and her appreciation of a funny story will not be forgotten by the Sisters.
Due to failing health Sr. Christopher was missioned to Lakelands in December 2018 where she felt at home from the beginning. Here the Sisters and Staff benefited from her love of classical music as they enjoyed the sound of Andre Rieu coming from her room while she was having her breakfast each morning.
She was a woman of deep faith who was very faithful to prayer and to her calling as a Sister of Charity. She loved to spend time in the Chapel before the Blessed Sacrament, had great devotion to the Rosary and was never shy about telling us of her love for St. Joseph.
Nora’s family had a special place in her heart and she loved to talk about her beloved parents and tell stories of her happy childhood years growing up in New Ross and holidaying in Thomastown. In her early days as a Sister she spent her Summer holidays in Stanhope Street Convent with her Aunt, Sr. Brigid Kavanagh. Later when Sisters were permitted to spend holiday time with their families, the highlight of the year for Sr. Christopher was spending her Summer holidays with her family and attending the Light Opera Festival in Wexford with them.
Her health deteriorated further in the last few months of her life and following a number of occasions in hospital she was happy to accept the extra care she needed in Marian House Nursing Home where she was admitted from Loughlinstown Hospital on 6th March 2025. Her quiet, prayerful and good-humoured presence was missed in Lakelands by the Staff and Sisters.
Sr. Joseph Christopher died in Marian House during Easter week on 24th April 2025. Her Requiem Mass was celebrated by Fr. John McDonagh, former Parish Priest of St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Parish in Sandymount. She was buried in our Community cemetery in Donnybrook.
May she rest in peace.
