Welcome given by Sr Michelle Hetherington at Sr Una’s Funeral Mass
Good afternoon. On behalf of Sr. Mary’s family and the Religious Sisters of Charity I would like to welcome you to the Mass of Resurrection in celebration of Mary’s life. I would also like to thank the staff at St John of God and Mission Hospice that took such great care of Mary especially during her last few months.
Mary lived a long and fruitful life and over the course of that life was involved in various ministries – in childcare, teaching, bereavement groups, annulments, volunteering with the veterans and prayer groups, to mention but a few. And no doubt many stories will be brought to mind about her activities in these ministries, and which we can share later at the reception in Caritas.
We all remember her smile, her gracious manner and her “NOW SISTER, NOW SISTER”.
We remember Mary for her love of Galway and her family especially her sister Maureen, her nephews Ciaren, Sean, Liam and Aengus and their children. She was very proud of their achievements. She spoke often of Maureen and Willie, Maureen’s late husband.
Mary entertained us with the many stories of her childhood and young adulthood in her home town. She would laugh to herself as she recalled the characters involved and have us laughing to the point of tears. I think she may have added her own embellishments.
In later years Mary experience illness. This was particular hard on her. She came to live in Paseo del Mar some years ago and I saw the slow decline. She had a longing to return to her native Ireland. I am sure she is in heaven looking down on Galway Bay and delighting in the fresh crisp air that rolls in from the Atlantic Ocean.
She will be missed by all who knew her but we must remember that she is no further away from us than God and God is very near.
