Sr. Marie Therese Keane was born in Youghal, Co. Cork on 2nd March 1916. Her father was John L. Keane and her mother, Frances A. Keane nee Graham. She was baptised Frances Josephine. She worked as secretary in the office of her father who was a solicitor, until 6th May 1940 when she entered the Novitiate, Milltown, Dublin where she was professed on 20th January, 1943.
After Profession, Sr. M. Therese was missioned to Temple Street where she remained until September 1944. From September 1944 until January 1957 she was in Harold’s Cross in charge of the Nurses’ Home and the Sacristy. From January 1957 until October 1973 she was Assistant to the Local Leader and Missioner in Basin Lane. From October 1973 until December 1979 she was Local Leader and Missioner in Bray.
From December 1979 until October 1983 she was Assistant to the Local Leader as well as being Missioner in Tramore. While in Tramore Sr. Marie Therese was involved in Meals on Wheels, St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Senior Citizens Group as well as being the Home-School Liaison person. She was very involved in the Charismatic Prayer Group. From October 1983 until the Convent closed in September 1990 she was in Blarney.
Sr. Marie Therese was many things in Blarney. She was Local Leader and Missioner. She founded a Branch of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in the parish. She did immense work for the poor helping individual families financially and materially. She procured a mobile home in her brother’s yard for a local middle-aged man who had become homeless when he developed senility. Each Christmas she delivered hampers and toys to the needy families. She guided a thriving Mothers’ Sodality and was very successful in encouraging young members to join the ranks. At weekends she decorated the altars of the Parish Church. She was a member of the Board of Management of Scoil losagain, the local Primary Girls’ School.
When Blarney Convent closed, Sr. Marie Therese was offered a short Sabbatical of six weeks in Kinnoull, Scotland. At the end of this period she came to live in St. Vincent’s, Cork. Here she worked as Parish Sister. She was in charge of Meals-on-Wheels, cooking and delivering meals to the needy. She was Sacristan in the Convent where daily Mass was celebrated and she helped generally in community activities.
Sr. Marie Therese was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus on 17th April, 2013.
She entered Marymount, Curraheen on 27th April 2013 for a Respite period but she died there on 17th May, 2013. R.I.P.
