An appreciation of Sr Margaret Andrew Meade
Sr. Margaret Andrew Meade was born to Margaret and Andrew Meade in Grange, Castlelyons, Fermoy, Co. Cork on the 29 September, 1931. She entered the Religious Sisters of Charity in Milltown on the 1 November, 1948 and was professed on the 7 August, 1951.
The first thing that could be said about Sr. Margaret Andrew was that she was a woman of prayer, she loved novenas and each year attended both the Sacred Heart novena and the Novena of Grace in Gardiner Street, and in later years she stayed in Gardiner Street convent to be near the Church.
She was also a woman of steely determination and if she set her mind on something, then she would achieve it. During the snow when ordinary mortals would not venture outside the door, Margaret managed to get to Caritas where she worked as Sacristan which she was devoted to.
Margaret Andrew had a varied ‘career’. After profession, she worked in the laundry in Donnybrook and then went to Mountjoy Street as a student. From 1951 to 1956 she was a student, getting her degree and graduating from Carysfort College. She went back to Gardiner Street where she had already spent a year teaching and remained there until 1960 and between then and 1984 she taught in Stanhope Street, Mountjoy Street, Blarney, Tramore and Cappagh. During her last illness she often said that she did not enter the Loreto Sisters because she did not want to teach, so she joined the Sisters of Charity and became a teacher! She was, of course, a very hard-working and dedicated teacher, she was seen doing corrections on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day, and she always managed to get some of the students to help her do the odd jobs that had to be done.
Sadly she had a very serious accident in the early 1980’s which greatly impacted on her teaching career. She prayed fervently that the man who knocked her of her bicycle would not have to go to prison. She spent a very happy twenty years in Cappagh from 1984 until 2006 doing office work and working as a sacristan. She also loved working in the Hospital shop because she was interested in and loved talking to the customers.
She had an extraordinary love of her family as they had for her. She constantly prayed for them both in their successes and sorrows.
In 2006 she retired to Marmion House, here in Merrion and on the 4 May, 2010 she came to live in Loyola House. She died on the 5 March, 2012, having suffered greatly during her last illness but her sufferings are over now. May she rest in peace.
