Catherine Horan, daughter of Frank and Delia Horan (nee Forde), was born on 8th July 1936. She was the fourth in a family of five. Her sister Phil survives her. Catherine entered the Religious Sisters of Charity on 8th October 1956 and was professed on 1st May 1959. She died in Marymount, Our Lady’s Hospice on 7th July 2022, one day before her 86th birthday,
Catherine began her ministry in Temple Hill in 1959, thereafter she moved to the Laundry Office in Clonmel and was there for nearly ten years. This was followed by a short time in Nigeria, where she worked in the crafts industry with blind children. In 1969, Catherine returned to Ireland and in January 1970 began her training as a nurse in St Vincent’s Hospital. She excelled at nursing and her ministry in healthcare continued in Clydebank, Hackney, Cappagh, Baldoyle and Temple Street, until she suffered a stroke in 1981 at the untimely age of 45.
In November 1985, Catherine was transferred to Linden. She remained there until February 1997. This was followed by ten years in Loyola, Merrion. In February 2007, Catherine was transferred to Anna Gaynor, Our Lady’s Hospice.
During her years as an invalid, Catherine never complained and accepted her condition cheerfully. She was very artistic and many of her paintings were displayed in the Hospice and in the Day Centre where she attended art classes. She was very close to her family and constantly kept in touch with them. Catherine had a great memory for names. She took a great interest in her friends and kept up with many of them, especially at Christmas. She also had a great interest in the staff of Our Lady’s Hospice and whenever a new baby arrived, she always had a baby blessing for the mother to take home. Prayer was very important to Catherine and she had a special list of people for whom she prayed every night.
For fifteen years, Catherine was lovingly cared for by the staff and volunteers in Marymount, Anna Gaynor House. She will be greatly missed by them. Her funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Bernard Lowe cp on Monday 11th July 2022 in the Chapel of Our Lady’s Mount, Harold’s Cross.
Catherine is buried in the community cemetery, Donnybrook. May she rest in peace.
