An appreciation of Sr Kit Hopkins
Catherine Hopkins was born in Waterford on the 7th August 1925.
She had three brothers and four sisters.
Catherine entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of Charity in Mount Saint Anne’s Milltown on 11th October 1943. She was 18 years of age.
She was given the religious name ‘Sr. Teresa Martin’ but many years later she went back to using her baptismal name – Catherine (or Kit).
She made her first profession on 20th August 1946 after which she studied for a year in Mountjoy Street Secondary School. Later, while being initiated into community living she worked in Donnybrook. She became very proficient in laundry work and this proved to be a valuable asset later on when she shared her skills with many sisters.
In 1953 the Sisters of Charity made a foundation in California. Five Sisters were sent out and in the years immediately following, some young and recently professed Sisters were sent there to be initiated into the way of life in California and gradually trained in teaching. Sr. Teresa Martin, as she was then called, was sent out in 1956 and worked there till she was sent to Maria Assumpta Teacher Training College in London. Having completed her training she taught in Sowerby Bridge in Yorkshire and Bristol till she reached retirement age.
She then went into Parish work in Birmingham. Catherine was missioned back to Ireland in 1997. Her health had deteriorated and she was no longer able for active physical work. In her illness she never complained and never looked for attention. Catherine took on knitting and crocheting little baby blankets which were very attractive and colourful. She supplied them to Maternity hospitals – the Coombe and Holles Street. They were also ardently sought by our sisters in Mission Hospitals in Africa.
Catherine was very keen on Sports Programs on TV – especially on Snooker and kept us all informed on the Snooker games.
She was also very interested in Quiz programs and Crosswords and was always content and happy in herself.
She died very peacefully on Friday 30th March 2012 in the Mater Hospital. May she rest in peace.
