Our local schools play a central role in our communities. They are places where friendships are formed, learning takes place and families join together with the common goal of nurturing our children and enriching our society. To celebrate all that is good and positive in our primary schools, the CPSMA (Catholic Primary Schools Management Association) invited schools to participate in a national art competition with the theme: ‘Celebrating our Local Primary School’.
When 6th class teacher Kate McElligott discussed the theme with her pupils, they had lots of ideas about what made it special to be part of Stanhope Street Primary School. They talked about the different activities they get to take part in such as yoga, tag rugby, GAA and music lessons. They also said they were lucky because their school is a new building and they have so many great facilities. Others talked about how they love their school because they feel like a little family in their class and they have a great Principal and teachers.
They were then tasked with the challenge of turning their ideas into a picture. They worked very hard and were so excited when the posters were packaged and sent to CPSMA.
After a few weeks, the school got the exciting news that one of 6th class, Vicky Lin, had won the overall prize for her brilliant drawing which depicted all her classmates. She had made a special effort to draw all their individual and unique features. The words on Vicky’s poster read:
Every person is unique
Every friendship is unique
We are all unique in our own way and that’s how our school is unique
It treats everyone with respect
We’re one big family
The class were so happy when they were given the news and were told that everyone was going to support Vicky when she was being presented with her prize.
Vicky is a very talented artist and all of her class were very proud when she was presented with her prize by the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, at the CPSMA AGM, at a function in the Radisson Hotel, Dublin Airport, on 3rd March 2017.
