RSC Laudato Si Action Plan into Action
Our Sisters in different parts of the Congregation are contributing to preserve the fast degradation of our Common Home. Some of the activities our Sisters have undertaken over the past few months include:
Zambia: Working with children in parishes as well as work colleagues to plant trees. Our community in Ndola, are planting comfrey to use as organic fertilizer.
Nigeria: Reduction in the use of plastics. Some Sisters opting to walk and use public transport rather than driving. Some of our communities have also engaged in organic farming and producing their own healthy vegetables. The Sisters make organic manure from banana, plantain, yam peels, egg shells etc.
England: Responding to the needs of our Common home has become more of a combined effort rather than working in isolation. One of our Sisters in England works with CAFOD (Catholic Agency For Overseas Development) and she says …
“I continue to work with 14 parishes, supporting them in their efforts to care for the planet through engaging with the LiveSimply campaign. I also communicate to them CAFOD’s latest campaigns and over the past few months I have been in touch with my contacts about several campaigns including CAFOD’s booklet giving advice on a Catholic response to the forthcoming General Election, two petitions, on the new debt crisis – calling on political leaders to take action, and calling for an end to arm shipments to Israel, and in relation to Pilgrimages in different parts of the country organised by CAFOD. These are designed by CAFOD to encourage families to get out and about and enjoy the countryside.”

Our Sisters in England have been concentrating on resisting the Government’s neglect and blatant disregard for protections for the planet. This includes the permission for a new major oilfield in the North Sea as well as gas fields. Also, campaigners such as the CPRE – The Countryside Charity, say that the government is undermining protections for the countryside. Our Sisters have been responding to these issues by signing petitions and praying.
Malawi: In the efforts to Respond to the Cry of the Poor, our Sisters in Konzalendo have recently installed a hand pump in order to give the community access to clean drinking water.
