Saturday November 19, 2023, St. Anthony’s Indian Mission, celebrated their 100th Anniversary in Zuni New Mexico.
Sr. Geraldine Hamukale from the GLT, Srs. Brid O’Shea and Michelle Hetherington from the Californian Region flew into Albuquerque where they were met by Sr. Marsha the current Principal of the school. She then drove us the three hour journey to Zuni pointing out beautiful historic landmarks including their Sacred Mountain for his momentous event.
The atmosphere was rife with anticipation as everyone prepared to celebrate.
Rt. Rev James Wall, Bishop of Gallup Diocese officiated at the Mass. The bishop and other guests were welcomed in the Zuni traditional manner by the students from St. Anthony’s Indian School with the Harvest Dance. The packed Church was able to watch the harvest dance live streamed in the Parish Hall as they then journeyed to the Church. The whole effect was spectacular. The children’s choir and the music ministry led the congregation in song during the Mass and the Kindergarteners graced us with a gentle meditation song “Reign Lord”.
Fr. Patrick McGuire SMA, the pastor who is Scottish, spoke eloquently of the history and contribution of the many priests, religious brothers and sisters who have lived and ministered at the Mission over the last hundred years.
After the Mass the dancers led all those assembled to the cafeteria where we were greeted with a delicious meal, traditional dances, music, speeches and presentations.
We truly express a deep gratitude to the faculty, staff and volunteers who helped to make this celebration a tremendous success. It was indeed an honor and pleasure to attend this historic event.
