To mark the 200th Anniversary of the founding of our Congregation we invited the schools connected with the Sisters of Charity to take part in a ‘Mary Aikenhead Care for the Earth Project’. The project will run throughout the calendar year 2015. Each school was invited to nominate either a project in which they were already engaged or a new project as their entry.
Sixteen schools responded positively to our invitation, eleven from Ireland, three from Nigeria and two from Zambia. The congregation supported the schools with a modest grant to part fund their projects.
A great variety of projects have been undertaken by the schools in areas of food production, bio-diversity, waste management, global citizenship, gardening and green fingers. It is very heartening that there is already a great awareness of the need to be responsible for and care for Earth among the school populations.
