This year, the theme of International Women’s Day is “Give to Gain,” encouraging all of us to embrace generosity, collaboration, and a spirit of charity. For the Religious Sisters of Charity, this is not simply a theme; it is a way of life that has guided our congregation since its foundation by Mary Aikenhead.
For over two centuries, we have served communities in need, placing the dignity of others at the heart of our mission. Whether in hospitals, schools, social outreach, or pastoral care, our work reflects a simple but profound truth, when we give of ourselves in service and love, the benefits extend far beyond the immediate moment. In giving, we gain understanding, hope, and a deeper connection with one another.
The spirit of collaboration is central to this mission. We are grateful to work alongside colleagues, volunteers, and local communities, sharing knowledge, resources and care. Today, this shared mission continues through our ministries and partnerships, as together we seek to respond with compassion to the needs of our time. In these partnerships, generosity is multiplied, and small acts of kindness ripple outward, helping to build stronger communities.
On this International Women’s Day, we also pause to celebrate the countless women who dedicate themselves to the service of others. Their courage, commitment, and generosity embody the essence of “Give to Gain.” From our founding days to the present, women’s leadership, care, and vision have shaped a mission that continues to touch lives around the world.
As we reflect on this theme, we are reminded that generosity is not measured in grand gestures alone. It is found in the daily acts of listening, comforting, teaching, and supporting, acts that may go unnoticed yet leave a lasting impact. As Religious Sisters of Charity, this spirit of service continues to inspire us, reminding us that when we give of ourselves, we all gain a richer, more compassionate world.
