Women in many cultures are seen as objects and possession of men. Most often the widow is left with nothing to take care of the children after the death of her husband. The widow is also given to a family member to marry as a part of the man’s property and if she refuses she is pushed out of the house.
In Okpara Inland the Sisters of Charity felt the need to have a widow’s forum where they can come together to pray, share their experiences and support each other. Sr. Justina with the support and approval of the Parish Priest, Fr Godwin Orudje, formed the St. Anna’s Society at Mary Aikenhead Centre on the 7th May 2016. It was finally inaugurated and blessed by Fr Orudje on the 18th September 2016. It was named after St. Anna the prophetess of Luke’s Gospel. The women were very happy; they danced, acted a drama and celebrated their lives together.
Having a forum like this will enable them to share their experiences and feelings and assist one another in their needs. They were delighted and very grateful and appreciative. This is the first of its kind in the Diocese of Warri.
