Sr Maria Coates tells us of her role on the team in the Hospice in Hackney. She says that “continuing to work in the Mission Team at St. Joseph’s Hospice is a very worthwhile occupation which I enjoy so much. The last few months have been quite busy from a pastoral perspective, as we recently celebrated our annual Light up a Life Bereavement Service, which we were able to have outside. In spite of the rain, quite a number of people turned up to remember their loved ones. I also took part in the Memorial Service of Remembrance at St. Paul’s Cathedral. My work also includes supporting the Chaplaincy Team to care for our patients. The recent death of Sr. Geraldine O’Connor brought great sadness throughout the hospice as she had spent many years working here. It was a privilege to be able to help organise the Funeral Mass for the reception of her body into the Hospice Chapel and the Requiem Mass which took place the following day. There was a great attendance at the funeral from staff past and present as well as volunteers.
I am very happy to say that Venerable Mary Aikenhead’s Mission continues at the Hospice. I teach regularly on our Orientation Programme which focuses on the work of our Mission. The feedback that we receive is very positive. Participants have expressed a great interest in our Heritage and are fascinated by our history and particularly the life of Venerable Mary Aikenhead and the Sisters. The Heritage Room, which brings so many things to life is very much appreciated. Many of the participants often express a wish to learn more.
Last year saw the Platinum and Diamond Jubilee Celebration of three members of the Hackney Community. Sr. Anne Delaney, celebrated 70years, Sr. Theresa Harmon and Sr. Maria Coates celebrated 60years. We had a lovely day beginning with Holy Mass in the Hospice Chapel followed by a meal with Sisters, family and friends in the Convent. The photograph above is of our special day”.
I hope to minister at St Joseph’s Hospice for many years to come.
