The Religious Sisters of Charity in the California Region have published the following statement on the recent action by President Trump to discontinue DACA – Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.
The Religious Sisters of Charity join with the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and other organizations to support legislation, which gives our Dreamers stability and a future.
As Religious Sisters of Charity we are engaged with young immigrants and we are horrified at the recent action by President Trump to discontinue DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. We believe that our country is strengthened by the presence of immigrants and that our DACA youth contribute greatly.
We stand with immigrants, in full awareness of their struggles and long suffering efforts to gain an education, find employment and support their families. Therefore, we ask Congress to pass the Dream Act of 2017 immediately. Our young dreamers need to live their lives without fear.
The Religious Sisters of Charity are an international congregation, founded in Ireland by Mary Aikenhead in 1815 to minister to those made poor, to empower, educate and accompany them. We have vowed to do this wherever we are and now we do the same in the United States of America particularly in support of immigrants who came to our country as children. We believe it is a moral imperative that the administration and the country know we are with them.
