The Congress organised by the International Union of Superiors which concluded in Rome on June 18 established a new Global Network embracing regional and national networks of Religious engaged in the work of countering Human Trafficking. The new network is called TALITHA KUM taken from the Hebrew words used by Jesus in Mk. 5:41 when he tells the little girl to rise.

Present at the Rome Congress were approximately 40 delegates from networks of religious in Albania, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Kiribati, Lesotho, Netherlands, Nigeria, Philippines, Portugal, Romania, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, and Thailand.
In a telegram to the Congress, Pope Benedict praised the “courageous commitment in defence of human life” of religious sisters involved in helping victims of human trafficking. It expressed the Holy Father’s hopes that the meeting may create new awareness of the “invaluable work” of all those committed to “overcoming all forms of exploitation” of the human person.
