World Day of Migrants and Refugees, celebrated on September 29th, gave us an opportunity to deeply reflect on the struggles of those displaced, forced to leave their homes in search of safety, peace, and a better future. Pope Francis, in choosing this year’s theme, “God walks with His people,” reminds us that God accompanies all who are on the move—especially migrants and refugees—as they face immense challenges. We strive to embody this presence of God by walking alongside these vulnerable individuals, offering practical and spiritual support.
Our work with the Immigrant Council of Ireland (ICI) is a crucial part of this mission. This long-standing partnership allows us to provide hands-on support to migrants and refugees in Ireland, particularly those most vulnerable to human trafficking and exploitation. Speaking recently about our partnership Brian Killronan Chief executive of the ICI expressed how grateful he is for the continued support of the Religious Sisters of Charity which he says is often ‘unseen’ by the wider public and ‘goes above and beyond immediate care such as safe housing, emergency care and emotional support’. Indeed, our aim is not just to offer temporary relief but to help these individuals fully integrate into society. In many cases we develop a strong bond with those we assist and it’s incredibly rewarding to see them pursue educational and employment opportunities and work towards rebuilding their independence and dignity.
In addition to direct support, we are committed to raising awareness about the dangers of human trafficking and the rights of migrants and refugees. Through our schools, parishes, and community networks, our Sisters share stories of hope and survival, reminding people of the human face behind the statistics. We also stand with the ICI in advocating for stronger legislation to prevent trafficking and protect survivors, ensuring they are given the legal recognition and care they deserve.
Together with the ICI, we offer pathways for migrants to move from victims to survivors, ensuring they are empowered to reclaim their dignity and rebuild their lives.
The ongoing partnership between the Religious Sisters of Charity and the Immigrant Council of Ireland is built on a shared commitment to protecting the dignity and rights of every individual, especially those who are most vulnerable. On this World Day of Migrants and Refugees, we are inspired by the lives we have touched and transformed through our ministry and the importance of collective action in building a society where every migrant and refugee is welcomed, supported, and given the chance to flourish.
