Sister Marie Goretti Leen
1932 - 2018
Born: 28th September 1932
Entered Religious Life: 8th September 1951
Died: 11th March 2018
Sr. Marie Goretti Leen, baptised Mary Ann Was born in Kerry on the 28th September, 1932. She entered the Religious Sisters of Charity on the 8th September, 1951 and was professed on the 17th September, 1954.
During her sixty four years of professed life, she lived in the following places, Cappagh Dublin, Foxford, Co. Mayo, St. Patrick’s Kilkenny, Mountjoy Street, Dublin, Seville Place, Dublin, Blarney, Co. Cork, Tramore, Co Waterford and Gardiner Street, Dublin. In Tramore she set up the meals on wheels service for the surrounding area and ministered there for ten years. The seed was sown in the convent kitchen and developed when she acquired premises in the new community centre.
Sr. Goretti moved to Gardiner Street convent in November, 1979 and developed the ‘Food Centre’ as it was commonly known. This centre was to provide meals on wheels to the sick, the elderly and those living alone in the North Inner city. We read in the Gospels how Jesus refers to the importance of feeding the hungry and we find this especially in the Gospel Of Matthew, Chapter 25: 34 - ‘For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me to drink’. Sr. Goretti certainly has fed millions of people during her ten years in Tramore and her thirty six years in Gardiner Street. While feeding the hungry, Sr. Goretti also noticed other human needs and provided bathroom facilities and chiropody services for her clients.
There is no greater love than that for family, and she certainly loved her family and quietly spoke about them and their achievements. Place of birth is another sacred place in our hearts and for Sr. Goretti that was very strong and the Kerry footballers ranked very high.
One of the very strong devotions in Gardiner Street parish is the annual Novena of Grace in honour of St. Francis Xavier. This novena is celebrated from the 4th -12th March each year. It is very fitting that Sr. Goretti died during this Novena which she never missed while living in Gardiner Street convent.
Sr. Goretti went to the Anna Gaynor Wing in Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross on the 3rd September, 2015. She died very suddenly and peacefully on Sunday afternoon the 11th March 2018. She is buried in the Community Cemetery in Donnybrook. May she rest in peace.
