Sister Brid Forde
1935 - 2020
Born: 13th June 1935
Entered Religious Life: 11th October 1954
Died: 20th January 2020
Bridget Forde was born in Carron, Co. Clare on the 13 June, 1935 to Margaret (nee Canny) and Peter Forde. She had three brothers and three sisters. Her sisters were all Daughters of Charity and Sr. Pauline is the last surviving member of her family.
She entered on the 11 October, 1954 and was professed on the 11th May, 1957. She spent her working life in education and had qualified as a Primary School teacher, had a Diploma in Catechetics as well as a BA and Higher Diploma in Education. She spent most of her teaching life in Cork – from 1964 until 1989. As Principal, she had what one teacher described as ‘presence’ – she never raised her voice. Any problem would be solved without ‘fuss’.
She went to Rosary College in 1989 where she was Principal. Great tributes have been paid to her from Rosary College. I quote: “She was a beautiful soul whom we were so blessed to have known” and “Her likes will truly never be seen again!”
After Rosary College she took a Sabbatical. She did Pastoral work in Cappagh for five years, and in 2003 she went to Gardiner Street as Superior and as School Chaplain in Cappagh. After six years there she went to Walkinstown but still continued going to Cappagh as School Chaplain.
Her health deteriorated and she went to St. Patrick’s, Kilkenny where she spent three years. In November 2017 she came to Loyola, Merrion where she remained until her death on the 20 January, 2020.
In Loyola she retained that presence and at times her wisdom showed forth in her pithy comments. She loved mathematics and had read widely, mostly spiritual books, she also loved to listen to religious tapes.
She will be sadly missed by her family, especially her sister and her nephew Joseph whom she loved very much, probably because he also loves mathematics.
May her gentle soul rest in peace!
