Our Mission

Mary Aikenhead founded the Religious Sisters of Charity in Dublin, Ireland, in 1815.  She was a pioneer and innovator in addressing the unmet needs of the poor and we continue her work today and every day.

Our Sisters are engaged in education, healthcare, social and pastoral care and on human rights issues. We have communities in Ireland, England, Scotland, California, Nigeria, Zambia and Malawi.

The love of Christ urges us on

Our motto, taken from 2 Corinthians 5:14

Our History

The Religious Sisters of Charity are a congregation of religious women, founded by Mary Aikenhead in 1815, in Dublin. Mary Aikenhead was a woman of great faith, a visionary whose dream was to give to the poor, what people with money can buy. Today, we continue to follow her dream in Ireland, England, Scotland, Nigeria, Zambia, Malawi, and California.

Our History

Vocations

Most calls to religious life are not dramatic or direct. It may be a desire for a deeper relationship with God or wanting to find a deeper purpose in life. To discover God’s dream for us, there is a need to reflect on our desires, talents and personalities.

What We Do

Today, our Sisters nurse the sick, comfort the dying, visit prisoners, teach children and adults, and are involved with asylum seekers, refugees, immigrants, homeless people, advocate for anti-human trafficking and work with survivors of trafficking.

We also work with people living with physical and intellectual disabilities, and work in clubs, social centres, and outreach programmes. We are involved in the ministry of prayer, spirituality, retreats, counselling, spiritual direction, chaplaincy and care of the earth.
