Sister Anne Bernadette Dwyer
1938 - 2019
Born: 26th June 1929
Entered Religious Life: 24th May 1951
Died: 21st July 2019
Anne Dwyer, daughter of John Dwyer and Catherine Cox, was born on 26th June 1929 in Johnswell, Kilkenny.
Anne entered the Religious Sisters of Charity on 24th May 1950 and was received into the Novitiate on 10th August 1951 receiving the name, Sr. Mary Owen. She was professed on 19th January 1954.
Following profession Anne was assigned to catering in Milltown. Most of her religious life was spent in catering where she excelled as a cook. During her sixty-five years as a Sister of Charity, Anne ministered in the following communities: Milltown; St. Vincent’s, Cork; Mountjoy Street; Birkenhead; Birmingham; Sowerby Bridge; Temple Street; Walkinstown and Seville Place. In 1994 Sr. Anne retired to Donnybrook and from there in 1997 to Baldoyle. In 2004, when she needed full time care, she took up residence in St. Monica’s Nursing Home where she remained until her death in the Mater Hospital on 21st July 2019.
Sr. Anne Bernadette was a proud Kilkenny woman who avidly followed the Kilkenny hurling team. On the rather rare occasions when Kilkenny didn’t win, she would say she was glad that some other county enjoyed the day. Sr. Anne’s family meant so much to her and she often talked fondly of them. It pained her in recent times that, due to disability, she was unable to visit them in her home place in Kilkenny.
Sr. Anne showed enormous patience in her last illness and on occasions when she wasn’t feeling well would always pass it off as of no importance and then say, “and how’s yourself?” The staff in St. Monica’s, who cared so lovingly for Sr. Anne, will miss her good humour and her quick wit. Sr. Anne died on the 21st July 2019 and is buried in the community cemetery in Donnybrook.
